Do you wipe with virgin trees?

Another video blog entry. Do you use toilet paper made from virgin trees or do you buy toilet paper made from recycled paper? Let me know in the comments which one and why. (If your sound is turned right up you might hear my boy in the background, laughing at me.)

I use recyceled toiletpaper, and i got it for a nice prize:-) Maybe it depend where you buy it?

  • Coralie

@ edwin: Maybe so. Usually it costs slightly more here at the shops than the non-recycled stuff. There’s less demand for the recycled toilet paper (sadly) and so it costs more.

  • bummer. no I don’t. I just checked. I use Quilton Double Rolls.
I am personally boycotting kleenex, since they changed their whole brand to cottonelle. To me, that implies that they’re making their toilet paper from cotton, but they’re not. It’s 100% plantation pine. I think that’s just sneaky marketing.

I might have to investigate the other brands again (although maybe you did already, so I’ll just listen to your video after Neil goes to work and I can turn the radio off :)

  • Oh. and that should be bummer, yes I do. it’s too early for me ;)

  • Coralie

@ Melanie: At this stage, you have to actually be looking for recycled toilet paper to be using/buying it. Sadly, it’s only a very small section of the brands of toilet paper available in the toilet paper aisle.

  • oh. I listened to your video now. I don’t buy pretty colours or pretty patterns. as plain as you can, please :)

I also don’t like soggy paper (wet fingers) which is why I have been using the one I use. Until now. I will investigate. I did use recycled, a long time ago, but I got so annoyed with the bad quality of it that I gave up. Maybe it’s changed.

@ Melanie: You get wet fingers?? Perhaps you need to use just a couple of extra sheets of paper. LOL!! Or do you fold instead of scrunch? I scrunch. Never had wet fingers in my life.

    Hi Coralie!

I just discovered your website via Flickr. (I was searching for photos of native bees.)

I only use recycled paper to wipe my bum! I’m lucky it is readily available in big supermarkets here in Melbourne, and less expensive than the fancy brands with perfume etc.

I also go out of my way to get recycled paper towels for kitchen use - they are only available from Safeway (Woolies) in my area.

Facial tissues of recycled paper used to be available but are no longer.

Good on you for publicising this issue. It appalls me to think of our precious native forests being ripped to shreds so people can wipe their bums….

Hi, Therese. Thanks for your comment. It’s wonderful to know there are more people out there thinking about this issue and taking action! :-)

  • I tried recycled toilet paper before however the quality of it seemed to lack in comparison to the main stream brands of high quality toilet paper.

All hope was not lost however as I have just found a brand that is 100% tree free and made from easily and quickly regenerated natural resources.

Fingers crossed I will feel less guilty by next week whenever I think about the environment while going to the bathroom

@ Clinton: I’ve found that some of the supposedly very high quality toilet papers are _too_ soft and fluffy. When I’ve then returned to my own house to use the 2-ply, recycled stuff, it’s soft enough to feel comfortable, but not so soft that it’s like trying to wipe with a large marshmallow, or a small pillow or something.

What’s this new brand you’re talking about? I’d be interested to know what it’s made from from, too. I’m always on the look out for good brands that are more environmentally sustainable.
